Guatecaña, through the Association of Sugar Producers of Guatemala (Asazgua), is participating in the global forum on Climate Change, also known as COP29, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Asazgua took part in the international event titled “Addressing the Water-Energy Nexus in Climate Adaptation Strategies to Build Resilient Societies,” gosted by the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development, and “Addressing Agri-systems Adaptation through Nature-based Solutions (NbS) as a Vulnerability and Risk Reduction Measure in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) Region,” a collaborative event with the IICA and UNFCCC.
The Guatemalan Sugarcane Agroindustry is the only representative of the private sector from Guatemala at this major international event.
The first forum brought together leaders from the public and private sectors, as well as civil society, to discuss integrated water and energy resource management—key components in the fight against climate change. The second forum focused on sharing experiences and strategies for climate adaptation in the agricultural sector of Latin America, a region particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
Both events underscored Guatecaña’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 13 (Climate Action). These efforts align with the principles of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, further establishing the Sugarcane Agroindustry as a leader in sustainability and climate adaptation.
Guatecaña’s participation in these forums highlights its role as an agent of change, advocating for innovative policies and solutions that promote the efficient and sustainable use of water and energy resources. These international events provided a platform for the industry to share its experience and best practices implemented in Guatemala to build climate resilience.
