Guatecaña awarded 12 scholarships as part of its “Harvesting Opportunities” program, allowing young people from the South of Guatemala to continue their higher education at the private school: University of Valle de Guatemala (UVG), South Campus. This program is part of the Sugarcane Agroindustry’s social commitment and reaffirms its support for local and community development by promoting education.

The scholarship recipients are high school graduates between the ages of 18 and 25, from the towns of La Democracia, Escuintla, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, Masagua, Siquinalá, Nueva Concepción in the department of Escuintla, as well as Patulul and San Juan Bautista in Suchitepéquez all of them in the south of the country, area where the sugarcane mills operate.

The scholarship covers five years of study, including annual registration and a monthly stipend for the following degree programs: Agricultural and Livestock Technology Engineering, Automotive Technology and Transport Management Engineering, Industrial Technology Engineering, as well as three years of English studies. The scholarship award ceremony took place at UVG South Campus.

That’s why we support these young people so they have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally; in turn, they will have the ability to make a positive impact on their families and communities,” said Luis Miguel Paiz, General Manager of Asazgua.

The “Harvesting Opportunities” program aims to provide access to technical and university education for young people from the South of the country, so they can acquire the skills and competencies necessary for a successful entry into the job market and contribute to the development of Guatemala.

This program, funded by the sugarcane mills, has provided professional technical training to more than 2,800 young people, offering scholarships to study at the National Technical Training Institute (Intecap) and UVG. A new scholarship call is announced each year.

During the ceremony, Fernando Rivera Turcios, Executive Director of the University of Valle de Guatemala, emphasized the importance of higher education and ensuring young people have opportunities to complete their studies. On behalf of the scholarship recipients, Pablo Cardona thanked Guatecaña for the scholarship and reaffirmed his commitment to studying and using the knowledge he gains for the benefit of his family and community.
